‘Dreamers’ Celebrate Graduation Despite DACA Uncertainty!

NASHVILLE — On the day after Donald Trump was elected president, Jacob Maldonado sat in a Chipotle restaurant with his best friend, Maria Campos, and wondered aloud. “Is it worth it?” asked Maldonado, who had been working days and studying nights to get through Trevecca Nazarene University, where both were juniors.
They knew the political winds were shifting; they might not make it to graduation before the new administration ended Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, the status that protected them from deportation and gave them access to driver’s licenses and work permits that, in turn, helped make it possible for them to pay for college. “I just don’t know,” answered Campos. And they cried together.
Eighteen months later, Maldonado, now 22, walked across the stage at Boone Convocation Center, where the small, private college’s graduation had been moved from the outdoors due to a steady drizzle over Nashville.

No pun intended! This March 9th Sarape Sashes will be among many exhibitors at the Latina History Day Conference. Sarape Sashes will be there to enjoy the people and show off their beautiful and original sarape graduation sashes. After the Latina History Day Conference programming, participants are invited to the Comadre Network and Exhibit for an afternoon of networking with California’s most dynamic, inspiring, and successful Latinas. The exhibit area features vendors showcasing beautiful wares and organizations offering valuable information.

This year we’ll all celebrate Leading with Values and Purpose with Actress Sonia Manzano from Seseme Street and more exciting speakers to be announced soon. Sarape Sashes invites you to join us for a day that promises to be full of learning, empowerment, networking and fun!

The host for the event HOPE (Hispanas Organized for Political Equality) will feature minority women who are small business owners, artists, jewelers, arts and crafts vendors to showcase their products to over 800 Latinas. This is a unique and dynamic networking opportunity offered to small business owners and conference participants. Opportunities are also available for nonprofits and service providers looking to do outreach at the event, says HOPE.

The conference schedule also provides a venue during the Comadre Network and Exhibit Area for Latina leaders to network amongst themselves and with HOPE’s key sponsors. Participants can also purchase unique wares through an array of Latina vendors. We all HOPE to see you there! No pun intended!

Oh Baby! Look’s like everyone is getting into the Sarape Sashes craze!

Latina author Roxanne Ocampo has written a fantastic book to help with the little ones. It’s called “El Vuelo de la Mamá Quetzal: Cómo Criar Hijos Exitosos y Prepararlos para las Mejores Universidades” and we are so proud of her.

She asked us if we could don the little guys with our colorful Sarape Sashes for the cover and we were more than happy to help out! You rock Roxanne!

The cover turned out great and the book is a huge success. It’s received the International Latino Book Award and can be purchased online at Quetzal Mama! Go buy her book it’s a real winner and so is she!
